Texas Camel Corps |
Texas Camel Corps offers Sinai Camel School. This 4-day immersion in the life of the Bedouin is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from native camel handlers who have worked with camels for thousands of years. This September's trip is available for 10-12 people and spaces are filling up fast. Areas to be covered: saddle/tack construction and maintenance; various hobbling methods and needs (for grazing, for loading gear and for veterinary treatments); feeding and care; native medical practices; riding. All of this is presented during a 4-day camel trek through the historic Sinai desert. You will literally learn as the caravan moves daily. Native accoutrements (saddles, halters, bags, etc) will be available for purchase. These items are easily shipped back home via each participant's air carrier and don't require any special US Customs declarations or inspections. As a bonus, the three days following the camel experience will include sightseeing in and around Cairo/Giza. The Great Pyramid and Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum that houses all of King Tut's treasures, the massive Khan el Khalili market, Al Azhar mosque, Coptic Christian Cairo as well as climbing Mt. Sinai are all included as part of the course. |
![]() Here Saleh bin Suleiman makes a repair to a saddle. Note the twine and wire that are used. Repairs in the desert tend to be expedient and ad hoc. There are no Home Depots or Lowe's. When the Bedouin see something discarded, they instinctively know that its usefulness will soon show itself. |
![]() Depending on the area to travel across, equal time can be spent walking, rather than riding the camels. For example, when crossing mountain passes, riders dismount to lessen the stress on the camels. In this picture some members of the caravan are walking while others ride. For those not used to long periods of time in the saddle, the opportunity to stretch one's legs can be invaluable. |
![]() The halter used by the Bedouin of the Sinai is all in one piece, combined with a single riding rein. The two metal pieces touch either jaw and apply pressure to indicate direction or to stop when the rein is used. |
Land only price is $1600 per participant. All accommodations, transfers and most meals are included. See www.texascamelcorps.com/cameltreks.htm for specific itineraries and detailed descriptions. Group leader Doug Baum, of the Texas Camel Corps, speaks some Arabic and one or more members of the Bedouin guides will speak English very well to better facilitate learning.
